Lady

Lady

Word: Lady
Definition: a woman who is refined, polite, and well spoken
Synonym: queen, countess, broad, gal

These past few weeks (August 2016) have been the busiest I have ever been and I love it.
Currently I’m gearing up to put on a show to get my brand and images out there to the public. Although it’s an all ladies event, I feel like it will be a hit! Of course I will have another art show with other artists, but for now this is just to get myself out there more.

I’ve always had this fear that none of my work was worthy enough for the public to purchase. However these past few years I’ve learned that there are people who have been seriously interested in my style of art. So with this in mind, I started to put my butt in gear and produce work that not only would I love, but others too.

Over the years, although I produced plenty of work, I never got around to selling any of it. Then again, I wasn’t exactly sure how to market myself. Finally this year I got a bit of advice from business experts and here I am, selling prints and originals!

Be sure to never sell yourself short. Your work is unique, and even if it resembles another artists style that has inspired you, it’s still your own and you will always have someone out there who is more than happy to purchase your creation. Just keep producing work and don’t be afraid to put it out there to the public.

Cheers!

Revisit

Word: Revisit
Definition: come back or visit again.
Synonym: return, or visit again

Believe it or not, but after a couple years of having sketched this image on the computer, just now I’ve finished a couple versions of it.

No, I normally do get back to images much quicker, but something that I thought was completed ended up not being my “best” work. As my best friend T. had put it, “showcase only your very best work. This doesn’t look done.” (She said when the image was still in its infancy.

Okay so that last part I was paraphrasing, but you get the idea.

Style

Style

Word: Style
Definition: a manner of doing something.
Synonyms: technique, design, vogue.

I know that many people have a “style” of art. Mine comes with the many illustrations that I have grown to love and admire of the years. Most of my style comes from this so-called “womans” touch with a dash of realism and a hint of Japanese anime. It’s interesting to look back at my old work and actually see the transformation of this so-called “style” of mine grow and blossom, to what it is today. I doubt it will stay the same forever, considering I change my hair as often as I change my style of art. However, if it does stick, I want it to be distinguishable; so that when I do produce something completely fabulous, people can point out and say “Hey, that was done by The Owl Palette – Rojin Hamid”. Big ambitions and dreams for such a short post about something that’s significant in art.

We all have a style of our own; I wonder, what yours is and would you share it with me and the world?

WIP

WIP

Word: WIP (aka Work In Progress)
Definition: a project that is onward toward a final destination
Synonyms: advance, going, headway, passage

What do I mean by WIP (work in progress), well it’s quite simple! Lately I’ve been having a bit of an art road block (so to say). My last series was such a success to me, that I feel like I can’t find anything else to draw. This poses a real problem, considering that the moment I finish one piece of art, I tend to get side tracked and leave the next project in the dust.

Let’s be honest here, I just have a serious problem. Instead of looking at an upcoming series as the “next big thing”, I think of it this way, “It wont be as good as the last”. Terrible! That is just a horrible way to look at any future work!

For now however I am really trying my best to do multiple series in the hopes that one of them will inspire me to really push for at least 5 images total. I know that’s not a lot for a series, but it is the right step in progression.

So, what does that mean? Well, if I can accomplish multiple series of 5 images, then I could maybe produce a series that has 6 or 8 or maybe more the next time I come up with a series.

A collection in Fashion has something always in common with all of its designs. whether it be the accessories added, the color, fabrics and other such things included the collection always has something that ties it together. Maybe my current series has something that ties it to the last series? If that is the case, then my collection is not 5 in each series, but 10 in total. Well, that is, if I can finish this next series of images.

Here’s to working forward!

Creativity and Education

Creativity and Education

Word: Creativity
Definition: the use of the imagination or original ideas, esp. in the production of an artistic work.
Synonym: inventiveness, imagination, originality

Whenever I write one of my blog entries, I seem to write “inspire”, “creativity” and other words that are normally used repeatedly in each entry. Maybe it’s because those are the most simple of words to use when trying to get a thought across, or maybe because my thesaurus is missing and I’m too lazy to look it up online. Whatever the case maybe, it all comes down to one thing – imagination.

It is because of my imagination (that never really did die) that I am able to easily come up with a new blog or sketch, or kooky idea.

Recently I watched a TedTalk during brunch before heading to my day job. I couldn’t believe how funny the speaker was, but I also had no idea that he would ultimately speak the truth of what is happening in our schools. Never did it occur to me, the never-stop-drawing girl that I was, that the school system was trying to carve away my creativity. I guess I was that oblivious to the teachers devious plans for my entire elementary career ’cause ultimately I never seemed to have lost that ability. This almost feels like a super power.

So here I give to you the link to watch and decide for yourself whether or not this is happening in our schools. Personally, I never really cared for such things It didn’t dawn on me until (after watching this) I didn’t feel “smart” or “I couldn’t achieve anything” because I, didn’t have the “book-smarts”.

2014 Starter Kit

2014 Starter Kit

What you will need: inspiration, any  medium/canvas (preferably something you enjoy working with, ie. pen, tablet)
How much time needed: as much as you can find in your crazy busy day
When to start: effective immediately

Of course this is something personal. I’ve been inspired to really pursue what it is that I love – my art. It wasn’t easy and it really took a lot of people to convince me, but one person in particular – T. Now I know what you’re thinking, whose this T character and what the heck are you going on about?

Well T is my best friend, and I had finally had a chance to sit with her for a couple days to catch up. You see, I only get to see her once a year, and because of my terrible spending habit, my initial action to get my career up and running in the art industry landed at the bottom of my stack of things-to-do-in-2013. Even going to see her that year had been berried in the pit of stupidity (on my end). So when she said something to me (along the lines of me having no ambition in life) it hit home. This made such an impact, that as soon as I was able too, I was drawing furiously again.

It wasn’t as though I wasn’t drawing. That wasn’t the case at all. It was the fact that I wasn’t doing anything other than drawing. There was no promotion of my work, no seeking out commissions, or even making that idea available. I wasn’t whoring myself out (pardon the expression) like all other artists were. While I sat back in my “comfort” I didn’t realize that my passion in life was being swept to the back, under some dirty rug, in some empty room that no one ever uses.

So the idea was this; I would promote myself, my work, my services. This way, I wont be in the slum for another 3 years wondering if anything will become of my work.

I urge you artists, no matter how good or bad you are at your passion, you push for it to become your life. Why would you want to do a job that you don’t like? Get in gear and get moving. Plan that budget, pull through with your sketch-a-day (no matter how small or ridiculous), and find that inspiration you need. It will be hard, and a long year, but imagine, at this age, it’s never too late.

Pink

Pink

Word: Pink .noun
Definition: rose color
Synonyms: blush, coral, flush, fuchsia, rose, roseate, salmon

This color, there is just something about it that has always drawn me to it. There are men and women who wear this color, but I know some who live their life in it. Though I may not live in it completely I still have my fair share of pink. Three pink throw blankets, pink night shirt, pink dresses, pink body spray, pink jewelry, pink makeup bag, and much much more. I adore the color (as much as red). I really like using it as an accent color in my artwork. Why? Well because it just looks so clean and soft. In the picture of a friends avatar (on a website I’m part of), I tried to to accent the image with a shade of pink that pops and gives some definition to it all. The eye (mine in particular) is drawn to that color and enhances my experience with the image.

If you use a color right, (the right shade or tone), your image can look outstanding, even if it’s as simple as a cartoon-ish like character (such as this one). There is always a time to play with multiple colors and then there is a time for color to shine above the rest.
Use colors wisely.
