Word: Lady
Definition: a woman who is refined, polite, and well spoken
Synonym: queen, countess, broad, gal

These past few weeks (August 2016) have been the busiest I have ever been and I love it.
Currently I’m gearing up to put on a show to get my brand and images out there to the public. Although it’s an all ladies event, I feel like it will be a hit! Of course I will have another art show with other artists, but for now this is just to get myself out there more.

I’ve always had this fear that none of my work was worthy enough for the public to purchase. However these past few years I’ve learned that there are people who have been seriously interested in my style of art. So with this in mind, I started to put my butt in gear and produce work that not only would I love, but others too.

Over the years, although I produced plenty of work, I never got around to selling any of it. Then again, I wasn’t exactly sure how to market myself. Finally this year I got a bit of advice from business experts and here I am, selling prints and originals!

Be sure to never sell yourself short. Your work is unique, and even if it resembles another artists style that has inspired you, it’s still your own and you will always have someone out there who is more than happy to purchase your creation. Just keep producing work and don’t be afraid to put it out there to the public.

Word: Revisit
Definition: come back or visit again.
Synonym: return, or visit again

Believe it or not, but after a couple years of having sketched this image on the computer, just now I’ve finished a couple versions of it.

No, I normally do get back to images much quicker, but something that I thought was completed ended up not being my “best” work. As my best friend T. had put it, “showcase only your very best work. This doesn’t look done.” (She said when the image was still in its infancy.

Okay so that last part I was paraphrasing, but you get the idea.

Word: Plenty
Definition: a large or sufficient amount or quantity; more than enough.
Synonyms: wealth, abundance, luxury etc…

Over the summer I had the pleasure of taking a copious amount of photographs of some of my favourite people – my friends.

There are a so many places in my city to go to for settings to take pictures. Most being that of nature but with the added touch of either rustic or a hint of beauty. Of course I gave my models the choices of their outfits but they really pulled off the things I had directed to them.

With this I only give you less than a handful of the images I’m most proud of. I hope that you all feel as though you have plenty to work with in your own cities, with your friends volunteering their time, and natures abundance of backdrops.

Take advantage of all that you have around you, because you never know what you’ll produce until you utilise these things.

Love – What you do

Love – What you do

Word: Love
Definition: to adorn
Synonyms: admire, adore

I love what I do. I think about it when I wake up in the morning, and I think about it when I sleep at night. One day, and I keep telling myself this, I will have my own office where there will be a couch and I’ll be working late hours so it’s significant to have one. I’ll need a place to crash for a few hours and then get back right into working.

Right now, I honestly am doing nothing but practicing work for people who have some create ideas and concepts of characters. I bring them to life and truly do I love doing it! I can create characters on my own but when people come to me, with their idea, I smile and graciously accept the challenge. These characters have depth and I love bringing them to light.

Seriously, I will enjoy doing this for the rest of my life. I hope to wake up and get straight to working on artworks for clients, and in the evening, if I have time, I’ll take up a part-time for some extra cash.

Here’s some advice from Sister Mary Clarence (Sister Act) played by Whoopie Goldberg; “If all you can do is think about singing when you go to bed at night, and when you wake up in the morning, then you should sing.”

I’m not joking! You guys, wake up and pay attention!

Creativity and Education

Creativity and Education

Word: Creativity
Definition: the use of the imagination or original ideas, esp. in the production of an artistic work.
Synonym: inventiveness, imagination, originality

Whenever I write one of my blog entries, I seem to write “inspire”, “creativity” and other words that are normally used repeatedly in each entry. Maybe it’s because those are the most simple of words to use when trying to get a thought across, or maybe because my thesaurus is missing and I’m too lazy to look it up online. Whatever the case maybe, it all comes down to one thing – imagination.

It is because of my imagination (that never really did die) that I am able to easily come up with a new blog or sketch, or kooky idea.

Recently I watched a TedTalk during brunch before heading to my day job. I couldn’t believe how funny the speaker was, but I also had no idea that he would ultimately speak the truth of what is happening in our schools. Never did it occur to me, the never-stop-drawing girl that I was, that the school system was trying to carve away my creativity. I guess I was that oblivious to the teachers devious plans for my entire elementary career ’cause ultimately I never seemed to have lost that ability. This almost feels like a super power.

So here I give to you the link to watch and decide for yourself whether or not this is happening in our schools. Personally, I never really cared for such things It didn’t dawn on me until (after watching this) I didn’t feel “smart” or “I couldn’t achieve anything” because I, didn’t have the “book-smarts”.

Alternate Persona

Alternate Persona

Word: Alternate
Definition: A person acting in the place of another; a substitute.
Synonyms: other, substitute, different, another, second

A lot of people think that they have an alternate persona, a different personality that is still within them, in their control and ultimately a much better self. Personally I think we all enjoy the idea of being someone else; even to the point of looking like someone we (in our present state) do not resemble.

This persona/character, whatever you’d like to call it, gives many people courage, inspiration, strength, and an otherwise interesting life. Of course we don’t act out their world as they would never act out ours (why would they, are we not the lesser of them?)

The reason why I think some who do dress and act, even develop this need to bring the character to life in this reality, is because we personally need them in certain times of our lives. It seems like a mental disorder to some, but for those who have mental disorders themselves, it is a sort of cure/treatment. This is our way to relieve the tensions, the bad thoughts, and even improve our lifestyles.

Many people would not approve, nor agree to this sort of behaviour. Even accepting the idea of their loved ones, friends, and or colleagues having an alternate persona seems a bit outrageous. Why cant they be normal they say.

Here’s why we can’t be normal, because the very idea of being the same as everyone else is just ludicrous. It is because of routine, social pressure that we have been told that who we are, is just not good enough, so we must conform and look like something else. So, in that, we have someone else in place of us. This character who has the power to fly, heal, and create. This is someone who can impact the world and be loved by many! So why would we want to remove this character from our lives, when you wont love us for who we are…normally?

I have a persona. She is Crimson-Valkyrie.
A fierce warrior, a creator, lover, and whimsical creature unlike any you’ve seen. Her companion is a night owl, and her muse is comical in his own sense. She’s not perfect, but she’s not weak either. She wants to show you the real meaning of beauty in you and the world. She wants to inspire and give you the strength to make your own magic, to bring those dreams come true.

For my dears, I say, why not take a moment and explore your imagination to find your alternate persona? Maybe your imaginary friend was this person and they never really did go away.

Dream on.

2014 Starter Kit

2014 Starter Kit

What you will need: inspiration, any  medium/canvas (preferably something you enjoy working with, ie. pen, tablet)
How much time needed: as much as you can find in your crazy busy day
When to start: effective immediately

Of course this is something personal. I’ve been inspired to really pursue what it is that I love – my art. It wasn’t easy and it really took a lot of people to convince me, but one person in particular – T. Now I know what you’re thinking, whose this T character and what the heck are you going on about?

Well T is my best friend, and I had finally had a chance to sit with her for a couple days to catch up. You see, I only get to see her once a year, and because of my terrible spending habit, my initial action to get my career up and running in the art industry landed at the bottom of my stack of things-to-do-in-2013. Even going to see her that year had been berried in the pit of stupidity (on my end). So when she said something to me (along the lines of me having no ambition in life) it hit home. This made such an impact, that as soon as I was able too, I was drawing furiously again.

It wasn’t as though I wasn’t drawing. That wasn’t the case at all. It was the fact that I wasn’t doing anything other than drawing. There was no promotion of my work, no seeking out commissions, or even making that idea available. I wasn’t whoring myself out (pardon the expression) like all other artists were. While I sat back in my “comfort” I didn’t realize that my passion in life was being swept to the back, under some dirty rug, in some empty room that no one ever uses.

So the idea was this; I would promote myself, my work, my services. This way, I wont be in the slum for another 3 years wondering if anything will become of my work.

I urge you artists, no matter how good or bad you are at your passion, you push for it to become your life. Why would you want to do a job that you don’t like? Get in gear and get moving. Plan that budget, pull through with your sketch-a-day (no matter how small or ridiculous), and find that inspiration you need. It will be hard, and a long year, but imagine, at this age, it’s never too late.

Word: Lust
Definition: appetite, passion
Synonyms:  desire, weakness, lechery, fervor, animal-ism, aphrodisia

The Butler and The Crimson Djinn

What can I say? I have a bit of a craving for some art. I don’t know if you are aware but I have a few characters from a story I am collaborating with a few people, and they really help me to practice with my figures. I didn’t know how well I could actually do figures until I looked back to some old work that I did of live nude models; where I came across an image of a man that I drew, which stunned me. I hate drawing with the idea that I can’t have a single line out of place, however this image proved me wrong. I will add it to the blog soon, (maybe a lot of my old work too) but for now, I will just say that I have grown with my style and thanks to the idea of possibly going beyond my comfort zone of figures, I’ll produce more interesting work.

So I hope you enjoy this sexy scene.

Word: Myth .noun
Definition: fictitious story, often ancient
Synonyms: allegory, bestiary, bunk, crock, fabrication, fairy story, fairy tale, falsehood, fantasy, fib, fiction, figment, fish story, hogwash, invention, legend,  romance, tale, tall story

the myth

Why the creature? Simple, why ever not? Think about the things you create in your own mind. Stories, images, people, places, things, and when you’re told to ‘imagine’ your brain literally will create just about anything. So I say, why not a  half goat, half man? What is so wrong with this picture? Nothing I tell you, because I felt the need and the want to draw something I don’t normally do. It helps the creative juices to flow and bring about new things that your own hands and mind aren’t used too.

I tend to look to movies and other sorts of media (books, music etc) to help with my art. I mean what good is it to sit in a room, filled with little to nothing and be told to “be creative”. Most art will start somewhere, and when doing preliminary work, we have our rough sketches, our thumbnails to work with and improve on. I’m not saying I will improve on this specific image, but I think it’s a start for me to draw bigger and better things. You don’t have to stick with the real things, look to fiction, mythology, legend, and maybe something will come about in your head.

Usually I will draw either a person, place, or thing (including animals) but then you want to combine them, bringing about new and interesting images. So I say be the genius that you are and combine and grow with what you already have and know. I think you’ll be surprised at what you come up with and what you’re actually capable of creating.

Remember, weird is more than O.K!
Look back on the earlier civilizations and maybe you’ll learn something of their art to inspire your own.
What do you have to lose?
