Word: Lady
Definition: a woman who is refined, polite, and well spoken
Synonym: queen, countess, broad, gal

These past few weeks (August 2016) have been the busiest I have ever been and I love it.
Currently I’m gearing up to put on a show to get my brand and images out there to the public. Although it’s an all ladies event, I feel like it will be a hit! Of course I will have another art show with other artists, but for now this is just to get myself out there more.

I’ve always had this fear that none of my work was worthy enough for the public to purchase. However these past few years I’ve learned that there are people who have been seriously interested in my style of art. So with this in mind, I started to put my butt in gear and produce work that not only would I love, but others too.

Over the years, although I produced plenty of work, I never got around to selling any of it. Then again, I wasn’t exactly sure how to market myself. Finally this year I got a bit of advice from business experts and here I am, selling prints and originals!

Be sure to never sell yourself short. Your work is unique, and even if it resembles another artists style that has inspired you, it’s still your own and you will always have someone out there who is more than happy to purchase your creation. Just keep producing work and don’t be afraid to put it out there to the public.

Word: Revisit
Definition: come back or visit again.
Synonym: return, or visit again

Believe it or not, but after a couple years of having sketched this image on the computer, just now I’ve finished a couple versions of it.

No, I normally do get back to images much quicker, but something that I thought was completed ended up not being my “best” work. As my best friend T. had put it, “showcase only your very best work. This doesn’t look done.” (She said when the image was still in its infancy.

Okay so that last part I was paraphrasing, but you get the idea.

Word: Style
Definition: a manner of doing something.
Synonyms: technique, design, vogue.

I know that many people have a “style” of art. Mine comes with the many illustrations that I have grown to love and admire of the years. Most of my style comes from this so-called “womans” touch with a dash of realism and a hint of Japanese anime. It’s interesting to look back at my old work and actually see the transformation of this so-called “style” of mine grow and blossom, to what it is today. I doubt it will stay the same forever, considering I change my hair as often as I change my style of art. However, if it does stick, I want it to be distinguishable; so that when I do produce something completely fabulous, people can point out and say “Hey, that was done by The Owl Palette – Rojin Hamid”. Big ambitions and dreams for such a short post about something that’s significant in art.

We all have a style of our own; I wonder, what yours is and would you share it with me and the world?

Word: WIP (aka Work In Progress)
Definition: a project that is onward toward a final destination
Synonyms: advance, going, headway, passage

What do I mean by WIP (work in progress), well it’s quite simple! Lately I’ve been having a bit of an art road block (so to say). My last series was such a success to me, that I feel like I can’t find anything else to draw. This poses a real problem, considering that the moment I finish one piece of art, I tend to get side tracked and leave the next project in the dust.

Let’s be honest here, I just have a serious problem. Instead of looking at an upcoming series as the “next big thing”, I think of it this way, “It wont be as good as the last”. Terrible! That is just a horrible way to look at any future work!

For now however I am really trying my best to do multiple series in the hopes that one of them will inspire me to really push for at least 5 images total. I know that’s not a lot for a series, but it is the right step in progression.

So, what does that mean? Well, if I can accomplish multiple series of 5 images, then I could maybe produce a series that has 6 or 8 or maybe more the next time I come up with a series.

A collection in Fashion has something always in common with all of its designs. whether it be the accessories added, the color, fabrics and other such things included the collection always has something that ties it together. Maybe my current series has something that ties it to the last series? If that is the case, then my collection is not 5 in each series, but 10 in total. Well, that is, if I can finish this next series of images.

Here’s to working forward!

2014 Starter Kit

2014 Starter Kit

What you will need: inspiration, any  medium/canvas (preferably something you enjoy working with, ie. pen, tablet)
How much time needed: as much as you can find in your crazy busy day
When to start: effective immediately

Of course this is something personal. I’ve been inspired to really pursue what it is that I love – my art. It wasn’t easy and it really took a lot of people to convince me, but one person in particular – T. Now I know what you’re thinking, whose this T character and what the heck are you going on about?

Well T is my best friend, and I had finally had a chance to sit with her for a couple days to catch up. You see, I only get to see her once a year, and because of my terrible spending habit, my initial action to get my career up and running in the art industry landed at the bottom of my stack of things-to-do-in-2013. Even going to see her that year had been berried in the pit of stupidity (on my end). So when she said something to me (along the lines of me having no ambition in life) it hit home. This made such an impact, that as soon as I was able too, I was drawing furiously again.

It wasn’t as though I wasn’t drawing. That wasn’t the case at all. It was the fact that I wasn’t doing anything other than drawing. There was no promotion of my work, no seeking out commissions, or even making that idea available. I wasn’t whoring myself out (pardon the expression) like all other artists were. While I sat back in my “comfort” I didn’t realize that my passion in life was being swept to the back, under some dirty rug, in some empty room that no one ever uses.

So the idea was this; I would promote myself, my work, my services. This way, I wont be in the slum for another 3 years wondering if anything will become of my work.

I urge you artists, no matter how good or bad you are at your passion, you push for it to become your life. Why would you want to do a job that you don’t like? Get in gear and get moving. Plan that budget, pull through with your sketch-a-day (no matter how small or ridiculous), and find that inspiration you need. It will be hard, and a long year, but imagine, at this age, it’s never too late.

Word: Play
Definition: Have fun
Synonyms: Perform, act, move use, utilize, apply, employ

When work becomes more like work and less like play, what’s the fun in that? Recently I’ve been noticing at my regular job that it’s not really as amusing as I use to think it to be. It just feels like work and worst of all, I stress out. OptionsUnlimited and I collaborate on a lot of things in his blog (which you could read by clicking his name). In there we have plenty of fun with a whole lot of different activities. Festivals, pranks, and everyday silliness.

One night, for a good time, he told me to bring my camera and we were out the door, heading to one of the parking garages in our city. As we were leaving the building to head on out, he goes to tell me this thing is a competition, a race, I believe. I’m excited and ready to take pictures, but with my new camera I can’t seem to figure many of the settings out (being the Nikon DSLR 3200, what do I know about it?). So there were going to be a bunch of fast moving, excited young and old skaters whipping by me and I wont even have my lens cap off yet.

It was actually safe to say that I got a couple nice shots, but they weren’t as good as I would have liked them to be. No worries though, nothing that Photoshop couldn’t handle! However I was lucky enough to have OptionsUnlimited there to take a few and play with the settings. He’s much better at the night time shots than I am.

Thats the thing eh? You get a new piece of equipment, a bit more advance than you’d imagine, but well worth it, and yet you don’t know much. Time to educate yourself, I say! So what better way than to actually go out, in a setting you’re not comfortable with and mess around? Who knows, you might actually get something totally unexpected and make something of it.

If anything, just say it’s abstract and walk away (hehe).

Pantone Colors

Pantone Colors

Word: Color
Definition:  the visual perceptual property corresponding in humans to the categories called red, green, blue, and others. Color derives from the spectrum of light (distribution of light power versus wavelength) interacting in the eye with the spectral sensitivities of the light receptors. Color categories and physical specifications of color are also associated with objects, materials, light sources, etc., based on their physical properties such as light absorption, reflection, or emission spectra. By defining a color space, colors can be identified numerically by their coordinates.

Recently I’ve been promoted in my job to Coordinator. Working in retail can have its ups and downs, but for me, right now, it’s mainly an up from what I was doing before. I work in a clothing/accessories store, and for the most part, I had little to no challenge. Lucky for me, the position of Coordinator (for the departments Mens/kids/infants/shoes) opened up. Now already I had been working in Shoes as the full timer, however it wasn’t anything big. I only handled shoes and just shoes. There wasn’t much I could do when it came to merchandising.

So day in and day out I did that, until I got this position in the store. Funny enough I began to apply my color theory and anything I had learned in fashion class to this particular position.  It comes a little more naturally to me than others when trying to come up with an innovative outfit, but I get the occasional stump (when merchandise is low). None the less I think I’ve done a great job so far in my week and a half of work.

Pink Pantone Color with Pig

You maybe now wondering what all this has to do with ‘Color’. Simply it’s that from working in this section, today I received a children’s book in the shipment. Could imagine my reaction when I first laid eyes on it? No? Well let me just say that I was instantly in-love and nothing could stop me from purchasing it. It’s called ‘Pantone Colors’ and honestly, it’s the cutest and smartest thing to come out since sliced bread (for me anyways).

My coworker of mine was checking my bag to see what I got and was completely surprised at my purchase. She honestly did not believe it was for me. I had to explain to her my love of color and the fact it would come in handy when doing a children’s book project for a client or something of sort. I may not need it now, or maybe never, but I know one day my children will appreciate it!

Even if there is no real use for something that was made for a child, it can sometimes be comforting knowing you own something you never had yourself when younger. I know I would have looked at this book day in and out if it was created back when I was little.

So by something that reminds you of what you missed out in your youth. It may complete a piece of you when you’re older.

alternate persona with koi and flower
imagine the wonders

Can you imagine the world being abnormal? I picture floating koi-fish, large flowers, bubbles around me when I fantasize about the things I adore, and so much more. Hey what can I say, I have an over active imagination sometimes. When I work I picture myself far off doing something completely different (but managing to do my job correctly at the same time). Sometimes you just need to give yourself a moment to take yourself away, far away, and surprise yourself with the ‘abnormal’.

The most romantic of things are imagined by the human mind.
Explore and be amazed.
